Bread, Rice, Potatoes, Pasta and Other Starchy Foods
You need between 6 and 11 portions a day
A portion should be eaten with every meal
1 Portion is Equal to:
- 1 Slice of bread
- Half a large baked potato or two small boiled potatoes
- 3 Heaped tablespoons of cooked pasta
- In general, the size of a portion is the size of your fist
Carbohydrates are broken down into a sugar called glucose – this is the main source of energy in our diets.
They are low in fat.
Wholegrain carbohydrates are high in fibre.
Cooking methods are important (i.e. when potatoes are made into chips they move into the ‘fats’ food group)
There are 2 main types of carbohydrates – Sugars (A.K.A. simple carbohydrates) and Starches (A.K.A. complex carbohydrates)
