Moving & Handling Do’s
Before using any moving and handling techniques you should always encourage the client to do as much as possible for themselves. They may need minimal support from you using correct moving and handling techniques or they may require moving and handling equipment, such as a hoist or slide sheet.
Every time you carry out a moving and handling task you should consider the following:
- Know your own strength & ability
- Explain to the client what is involved
- Encourage the client to do as much as possible for themselves
- Make sure there is enough room to move
- Keep the weight close to your body
- Wear suitable clothing
- Where possible adjust working height e.g. move the bed up/ down
- When there is more than one person involved in performing the move, agree who is the lead person
- Move together on the command: Ready – Steady – Move
- Always follow the method stated in the Person Centred Support Plan
