Administration of Tablets or Capsules
- Check consent – ask the client if they are ready to take their medication
- Prepare a drink of water
- Transfer the correct number of tablets into a clean container without touching them
- Ensure client is upright and comfortable
- Hand the client the container and drink/ support the client with how they take their medicines
- Ask the client to take a drink
- Ask the client to put the medication in the middle of their tongue and swallow with remaining drink, with their chin slightly down
- Ensure dose has been swallowed before signing the MAR chart – ask if they are ok
- Encourage the client to finish the drink
- If the client cannot take medication themselves, use a spoon not your hand
